Barry Wards , Deputy President
Molecular bacteriologist turned MAF adviser, Dr Barry Wards has been an active member of Forest & Bird for over 20 years, and since 2004 has held a position on the executive. A vocal advocate of ‘be the change’, Barry is a strong believer in community-based projects that drive people to take responsibility for their natural environment. His interests include environmental sustainability, as well as terrestrial and marine biodiversity. Barry can often be found in his garden tending to a selection of weeds, natives and exotics, or tramping in the hills throughout the North Island.

Mark's got a passion for the protection of nature from development. He believes many district and regional councils and their planners are weak, lacking the conviction to apply conditions of reasonable protection to natural land and seascapes from ugly, big box shopping and industrial buildings. "We must recognise we are imposing the footprint of concrete and tarseal across the land on one hand, but not committing to protecting or enhancing what little remains of the natural state at the same rate."

Interests: Urban conservation and environmental
issues, especially waste water systems, marine protection and encouraging active
participation by members in conservation. Anne is the convenor of the Legal Subcommittee
of the Executive which deals with all legal and Resource Management Act issues

Donald
Kerr, Executive Member
Highlighting the dangers of climate change on biodiversity is a key objective of Donald Kerr, who currently heads UCOL's National Diploma of Science. Donald joined Forest and Bird as a student, whilst studying genetics and botany at Massey University, and has seen the branch grow into one of the nation's strongest sections. The Manawatu branch now has a focus on freshwater, trying to restore water quality affected by both city and farm effluent. He's a keen cyclist, weeder, and occasional tramper, as well as a farmer of goats and cattle.

Joan Leckie
Bee-keeper, tramper and birder Joan Leckie had the urge for a good bush walk with like-minded environmentalists around 35 years ago, and unwittingly joined a group that would see her take on big businesses & councils over their environmental responsibilities. Joan established the Manawatu Estuary as a Ramsar site, and has successfully battled Fonterra over their discharge to the Manawatu River. Providing a home to around 140,000 bees, this small-scale beekeeper shares her property with bellbirds, wood pigeons & tuis. Her interests remain the sustainable use of the environment, fresh-water and coast.

Janet
Ledingham, Executive Member Janet has retired after 45 years working as
a cardiovascular researcher in the Otago Medical School. She has had a longterm
interest in the botany, ecology and landscape of the SI High Country and an active
involvement in conservation issues. Other interests include alpine plants, lichens,
tramping, photography, and doing voluntary work for DOC on conservation projects
annually.

Suzi Phillips , Executive Member
Suzi Phillips aims to boost the youth membership of Forest and Bird, particularly college and university students, to renew the next generation of Forest & Bird and strengthen it's journey in the 21st century. She is a journalist and conservationist, and joins the Executive after founding the Kaipara Branch several years ago. Suzi is also a keen birder, and a dedicated ornithologist

Craig Potton , Executive Member
Craig is a noted New Zealand photographer and conservationist. He has been actively involved in conservation work for over 20 years. He is particularly interested in seeing Forest & Bird pursuing the big national campaigns of: high country protection, controlling and eliminating pests and weeds, and protecting the marine environment including getting many more marine reserves and fighting global warming.
