Forest and Bird High Country Policy

Goal

That the indigenous ecosystems, flora and fauna, and the natural landscapes of the South Island high country are adequately protected in a comprehensive network of parks and reserves.

Action

1. Advocate for the establishment of a network of parks and reserves.

2. Seek conservation outcomes that are consistent with the New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy.

3. Promote ecologically sustainable management.

4. Advocate protection of significant inherent values of pastoral leases, preferably through Crown ownership and control.

5. Promote public access.

6. To the extent that it promotes conservation, advocate a fair financial return to the Crown for its high country assets.

7. Advocate for the adequate control of introduced weeds and pests and, where possible, their eradication, and for all relevant policies and plans to be consistent with this. 8. Advocate that any commercial forestry be adequately constrained, thereby preventing the spread of wilding trees and maintaining landscape values.
