Forest and Bird Reserves

Forest and Bird owns and manages more than 30 reserves throughout New Zealand. Several of these have been gifted to the Society, while others have been the focus of past campaigns and were bought to protect their conservation values. For example, the Te Rere reserve in the Catlins was purchased by Forest and Bird in 1989 to protect the most important mainland breeding site of the threatened hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin). Other reserves protect important areas of remnant lowland native forest or wetland.
