Grasmere Station Irrigation Appeal

P&E Grasmere Station Irrigation application

Appeal for donations to stop irrigation in the Waimakariri Basin

We need your help to fund an expert for the P&E appeal regarding a consent application to irrigate Grasmere Station.

This is an opportunity for submitters and others who feel strongly about protecting the Waimakariri Basin from the effects of intensive development.

In March 2013, Peter and Elizabeth Morrison - known as "P&E Ltd" applied for a resource consent to take water from the Cass River for spray irrigation 554 ha of land on Grasmere Station, to provide grazing land for approximately 3000 cattle. The irrigation was via five central pivots totalling three kilometres in length.

The application was declined, by Environment Canterbury however on 4th April, P&E Ltdappealed the decision to the Environment Court.

Forest and Bird is a party to the appeal and intends to provide expert evidence on the adverse effects the irrigation would have on the outstanding natural landscapes in this area.

It is hoped that Environment Canterbury and Fish and Game will be covering the water quality effects on the Cass River, Lake Grasmere and Lake Sarah.

Donations needed

We would be incredibly grateful for any donations to help us fund an expert witness for the Court case. Any amount, large or small is important. Please note that your contribution will be specifically for the P&E appeal. If the appeal does not proceed your donation will be refunded in full.
