Marine Farming - The ProblemMarine farming has the potential to have significant social and environmental effects in New Zealand. Marine farming is a growing industry. It requires high quality water but also impacts on scenic qualities of the coastal environment and on the marine ecosystem. These impacts have resulted in increased conflicts between those proposing to undertake marine farming, those using the marine environment for recreational use and those wishing to protect the coastal and marine environment. Many groups and individuals around New Zealand have been faced with marine farm proposals in areas of the coast where marine farming had not previously taken place. These have included applications for mussel farms, oyster farms, salmon sea cages and the farming of exotic algae. The marine farming gold rush will result in further
restrictions on public access and enjoyment of the coast and have a negative
impact on marine biodiversity. Learn how to have your say on marine farming
