  Auckland Naturally

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest urban area – but it is also home to some of our most spectacular scenery, our most interesting native habitats, and our most endangered plants and animals.

Forest & Bird has nine branches in the Auckland region, and we are working together to create Auckland Naturally, a campaign to link up the main “reservoirs” of bird habitat – the Waitakere and Hunua Ranges and Hauraki Gulf islands – and give a united direction to the individual restoration projects going on throughout the region.

This is an important step in bringing native birds back into the city in numbers.  Already Forest & Bird has identified the “Northwest Wildlink,” running between Whangaparoa and Waitakere across the North Shore, and priority is being given to pest control and planting in this area.

Another part of Auckland Naturally is Forest & Bird’s Ark in the Park, a restoration and pest control programme in the Waitakere Ranges.  Possible future links may be identified along Manukau Harbour, the coastline of the Inner Hauraki Gulf and other areas in central and south Auckland.

Our Auckland Naturally newsletters keep supporters up to date with progress of the campaign, and what they can do to help.

We hope you take the opportunity to get involved wherever you live in Auckland – even in central Auckland the contribution of parks and private gardens is extremely important.
