Establishment, development and maintenance of the reserve has been supported and worked  on by Forest and Bird members.

The reserve contains numerous springs of pure water emerging along an earthquake fault line, and is home to native birds such as fantail, tui, pukeko, silvereye, kingfisher, scaup, hawk and grey warbler.

The wetland areas of the reserve also contain populations of Southern Bell frogs, long-finned eel and endangered mudfish.
