  Save the Mokihinui

Save the Mokihinui
~Let the river live~

Nestled under the western shoulder of Kahurangi National Park, the Mokihinui is the West Coast’s third largest river, draining the vast uplands and mountains of the Lyell, Radiant, Allen, Glasgow and Matiri Ranges, falling steeply through granite and limestone gorges, emerging to meander across open flats, before gathering all its waters together and making a determined charge for the coast through a steep earthquake-shattered gorge.

The gorge is a wilderness treasure, with beech forests, ancient podocarps, riotous displays of rata, and rimu festooned with kiekie.  The river itself alternately dashes across granite and greywacke boulders, and glides through deep pools, as it twists and turns through the gorge.  Living in the river are blue duck (whio), long finned eel (tuna), giant kokopu, and a rich array of other native species.  The river and forests clothing the hillsides provide habitat for 16 threatened species.  Long-tailed bats, western weka, kereru, and powelliphanta snails inhabit this ecological niche.

New Zealand’s own database of waterbodies of national importance ranks the Mokihinui 7th for its natural values.

But it all could change …

At the mouth of this deeply incised granite gorge, Meridian Energy has proposed a vast hydro scheme –an 85 metre high dam flooding this spectacular gorge.  Fourteen kilometres of gorge disappearing under 80 metres of water; 330 hectares of river bed and forest flooded; habitat lost again!  Its all in the name of ‘generating more power’.  Yet it’s the biodiversity and wilderness that pay the biggest cost.

Meridian Energy is a state-owned enterprise, owned by our government on behalf of the people of this country.  With political will, other energy options exist.

With your help, we can save the Mokihinui River.

How you can help

Submissions have now closed!
Thanks to all of you who made submissions to help protect this river.  An amazing 266 submissions were received with over 70% of submissions opposing Meridian’s plans.  Thanks particularly to all the conservation organisations, rafting and kayaking groups, tramping clubs, fishing groups, members of the local community – and to the general public from right across New Zealand – for taking a stand!  Click for a list of organisations which have submitted in opposition.

But we still need your help!

Write to the Minister of Conservation and/or West Coast Conservancy Office thanking them for upholding protection of the biodiversity, recreational assets, and historical heritage of the Mokihinui River. Ask them to:

  • Continue to protect the Mokihinui River.
  • Retain the ‘stewardship land’ and consider the Mokihinui Gorge for higher protected status given its obvious ecological values.
  • Decline any request by Meridian Energy for a concession to remove old growth forest and flood the gorge.
  • Decline the application to run the transmission line across conservation land and especially through the Ngakawau Ecological Area and the Recommended Areas for Protection on the Stockton Plateau.
  • Upgrade the slip sections of the Mokihinui Track to the Forks Hut to make it safe.
  • If your Forest & Bird Branch has its own stories to tell from the Mokihinui area, please let the Department know.
