Forest & Bird is a partner in the Kakapo Recovery Programme.

The Kakapo Recovery Programme is a Threatened Species Trust Programme - a partnership between the Department of Conservation, a recognised community organisation and a corporate sponsor.

The corporate sponsor of the Kakapo Recovery Programme is Rio Tinto Aluminium (Comalco) New Zealand.

"Comalco's (now Rio Tinto) support for kakapo conservation is one of the most important corporate environmental sponsorships in New Zealand and, combined with DOC's skilled management, means the kakapo is in good hands. For us, it's a great thrill to be involved." - Keith Chapple, Past President, Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society.

The Kakapo Recovery Programme:

  • Manages kakapo in the wild to ensure they are healthy and ready for breeding
  • Researches new ideas anddevelops new technologies to help ensure a future for the kakapo
