Maui's Dolphin ID Guide

Use this photo guide to identify individual Māui's dolphins.

Some Maui's have unique markings that help scientists identify them as individuals. These markings are verified with genetic tests, which helps scientists understand where they are and how they move along the coast. When an individual breeds, the markings help researchers identify which calf belongs to who.

These images have been contributed by researchers from the University of Auckland, University of Otago, Oregon State University and the Department of Conservation as part of collaborative efforts for Maui dolphin conservation.

Special thanks to Dr Rochelle Constantine from the University of Auckland for providing this guide.
