Forest and Bird welcomes today's announcement that Te Matuku Marine Reserve off Waiheke Island will become a reality next Thursday the 4th of August.

Forest and Bird made the original proposal which lead to the reserve and is pleased that many years of work have finally led to its creation.

"This new Marine Reserve will make a significant contribution to the protection and enjoyment of the natural features of the Hauraki Gulf", said Dave Pattemore Forest and Bird's Northern Conservation Officer.

It is highly appropriate that this opening should take place during Conservation Week, with its theme of "Everything is Connected".
