North Shore Forest & Bird

Getting Involved - Opportunities for Volunteers

We are always looking for ways to involve people in the care and preservation of our North Shore habitat. Helping out is not only interesting and rewarding but it is also satisfying to know that you are making a difference. As a volunteer you meet people of all ages, develop skills and find new friendships. Below are a number of ways that you can be involved.

Kauri Die Back Disease - developing and maintaining cleaning stations.

Many of us are aware of the serious threat to kauri of Kauri Die Back disease. This bug is infesting and killing numerous kauri in Auckland and around Northland. Our branch is working with Auckland Council and the Kauri Die Back Program to set up Kauri Care stations at the entry points to North Shore reserves. To date there is no Kauri Die Back in the Kaipatiki Ward that we know of. We have met and chosen 2 reserves to work on initially. Council will supply signs, disinfectant and brushes and volunteers will maintain these with weekly visits to their allotted cleaning station(s) to check and top up disinfectant and to record the use of it.

The two reserves we have chosen are Kauri Glen and Kauri Park/Muriel Fisher/Fernglen. The entry points are:   Kauri Glen - Raymond Tce, Tui Glen Rd, Kauri Glen Rd, Gladstone Rd, Woodside Ave, Holdaway Ave, Paruru Ave, Mahuta Grove.    Kauri Park – Rangatira Ave, Hebe Place, Kauri Rd south, Fern Glen – upper and lower entrances. DOC are also looking for volunteers to monitor the cleaning stations at the Haigh Access Rd entry to Okura Walkway.

Grateful thanks to those who have volunteered to look after one or several of these entry points. We now need someone who would be the overall liaison between council and volunteers – ordering supplies etc. If this sounds like something you would like to assist with please contact our chairman Richard Hursthouse at northshore.branch@forestandbird.org.nz Or phone 410 5339. Our kauri need our help!

Volunteer Planting Day June 2011

Volunteer Planting Day June 2011

Tuff Crater is our main restoration project. We hold regular work days once a month on weekends and each Thursday. Work involves planting in season and removing invasive weeds such as moth plant, wattle seedlings, privet, elaeagnus, pampas grass and many others. Full instruction on what to do and how to recognise weeds will be given. Opportunity to be involved with other like minded volunteers and learn more about our native flora and fauna. Don't feel you have to be super-fit - we can accomodate all levels of fitness. For further information go to our calendar of events page or contact Anne phone 4805 570.

NB: Our major annual planting day is Sunday 10th June. We have 2000 trees to plant so are looking for plenty of keen planters. We'll be meeting at 10am and finish with a sausage sizzle around midday. If you can help please phone Anne Denny 480-5570

We are currently also looking for volunteers to assist with the following:

Trips Co-ordinator:  We organise an outing for members each month, you wouldn't need to lead trips, just find interesting ones and organise these. If this sounds like you please contact Richard 410-5339.

Resource Management Act:  Our RMA representative needs one or two assistants. This would suit someone with a passion for ensuring that development on the North Shore is sympathetic to the environment. A keeness to learn about the RMA would be a help. Contact Richard 410 5339.

Kiwi Conservation Club (KCC) Co-Ordinator:  In response to our request for 2 additional KCC co-ordinators we welcome Ann Brabant and Marilyn Gulliver to the KCC team with thanks.

Habitat Newsletter: In response to our request for a a person to undertake the design and collation of Habitat, we welcome Robin Purliant to our team of volunteers with thanks.

Other ways you can be involved
