THE HURUNUI “FUN DAY ON A WILD RIVER”
Sunday 29th November, 10am -3pm.
The Hurunui Day on a Wild River is being held to highlight the importance of wild rivers and the need to protect them from dams. The events are organised by eight conservation and recreation organisations that have united to speak up for our wild rivers and is one of 10 being held throughout New Zealand.
• Try out kayaking with White Water New Zealand.
• Learn to cast a fly with Fish and Game.
• Watch endangered birdlife with Forest and Bird.
• Watch the kayak slalom competition (11am until 2pm)
• Learn how to check and clean for didymo.
• Doc information officer on hand.
• Sausage sizzle.
• Hot and cold drinks provided.
The event is based alongside the Hurunui River at the Jollie Brook confluence.
Wild and scenic rivers are a big part of New Zealand’s heritage yet throughout the country they are under threat for irrigation and hydro development.
The Hurunui River is extremely popular for its white water rafting and kayaking, scenic beauty, rich wildlife and cultural history.
Turning up to celebrate the river is a positive way to tell decision-makers and the media that we love our wild rivers and want them to stay that way.
