We are planning a joint picnic and guided tour with members of the Upper Hutt Branch around part of Kaitoke Regional Park near Pakuratahi Forks on Saturday 31 March
THE COST WILL BE $30 PER PERSON
We will travel by coach, leaving Waikanae at 10:00 am, picking up people along the way, and arriving at Kaitoke around 11.15 am. We will have a little over four hours at the sanctuary leaving on the return journey at 3:30 pm to arrive in Waikanae by about 4.30 pm.
After the picnic (bring your own food etc.) we will be taken on a guided tour along well formed tracks through the forest near Pakuratahi Forks.
The park contains nearly 2500 hectares of mature native forest, includ-ing beech, rimu, northern rata, hinau and kamahi. At Pakuratahi Forks, ancient rata and rimu tower over a canopy of kamahi, hinau and miro. It is is also home to rare birds such as kaka, yellow-crowned parakeet and a significant number of New Zealand Falcon. It has large areas of original lowland rainforest with formed walking tracks and attractive riverside picnic areas. The park was the film-ing location for Rivendell and the Fords of Isen in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. More
