Race for the River

Palmerston North’s ‘Race for our River’ is a fun, easy access intro to multi-sport racing. It is totally family-friendly, yet offers a challenge for the real competitors as well. The purpose of the Race is to have fun and raise awareness about the need for healthier rivers in New Zealand.

The race has a Family Course and a Competitive Course. Both courses start at the Lagoon and are off-road along the river front bridle tracks, with all kayaking on the safety of the Lagoon. The Family Course is 5 km total including a run/walk, bike ride, bouncy castle obstacle course, and a short kayak loop on the Lagoon. The Competitive Course includes a 9 km run, 14 km bike, 2 km paddle on the Lagoon, and finishes through the same super obstacle course. Free kayaks are provided for both courses, or you are welcome to bring your own. Both courses include gravel and dirt paths along the Manawatu River so ensure your bicycle has suitable tyres.

Sunday 22 March is race day, the event starts at 9 a.m. sharp. Registration and the start finish area are at the Centennial Lagoon. Plenty of place and spot prizes. Entry is just $10 for individuals, $20 for teams of up to four, and $50 for corporate teams. Last year Fonterra cleaned up the corporate cup, so they’ll be looking for some competition this year.

While you race, your support crew can enjoy the entertainment and Clean River stallholders, including the Green Rig from Horizons. 'Healthy Rivers Healthy People' is the theme of the day. The Race is a fun day out for the community, and raises awareness of the opportunity for cleaner rivers in New Zealand.

The Race for Our River is organised by Forest & Bird Manawatu with the welcome assistance of the Manawatu Tri Club and the Manawatu Striders. Event sponsors include Fonterra, Horizons Regional Council, and Palmerston North City Council.

Working together, we can have a healthier Manawatu River.
