The Denniston Plateau, on conservation land, near Westport, is the home of Great Spotted Kiwi, Giant Land Snails, Green and Spotted Geckos, and more. An Australian company, Bathurst Ltd, plans a huge open cast coal mine. The mine would kill or displace all resident wildlife.
