On October 27 last year Forest & Bird was devastated to learn that our Ruapehu lodge had been destroyed in a fire.

The lodge was greatly loved by thousands of people who stayed there over the past 40 years, including many schoolchildren and community groups, as well as Forest & Bird members.
It was the perfect base from which to explore the natural wonders of the magnificent Tongariro National Park, or to enjoy an affordable ski trip or simply to relax in this tranquil location near Whakapapa Village.
The lodge was insured but insurance cover it was not enough to rebuild it to the stricter specifications now required by law, using environmentally friendly materials. We urgently need your help to meet the $300,000 shortfall to cover the costs of re-construction.
This is the first time in almost 50 years that we have asked for donations for a building project, and we hope you will understand the importance of the lodge in fostering a love of nature and the wider goals of conservation.
