Tatutuku Lodge: Essential Information For Visitors

Facilities

The lodge complex comprises three accommodation buildings, each of which is for the exclusive use of the parties in residence. Each building is self contained, with electric cooking and heating. Visitors need bring only sleeping bag, pillow case, bathroom and dish towels, and rubbish sacks.

Main Lodge, sleeps ten
Two four-bunk bedrooms, with two additional beds in the lounge. A well equipped kitchen includes stove, microwave, fridge, and baby’s high chair. A washroom is reached across a covered way.

Francis Coutts’ Cabin, sleeps four
Two two-bed bedrooms off kitchen/living area. Kitchen/living area includes stove, microwave, and fridge. Toilet, hand basin, and shower are in a block a few steps away from the cabin.

A-frame, sleeps two
One bedroom with two single beds. Small kitchen/living area includes a hot plate and electric frypan, a microwave, and a small fridge. A toilet, hand basin and shower are in a block a few steps away from the A-frame.

Rates (per person per night)

Main Lodge & Francis Coutts’ Cabin:
Members: $15 
Non-members: $20
School age children: $5
Under five years: No charge.

A-frame:
Members: $10
Non members: $15
School age children: $5
Under 5 years: No charge.

Groups using all three facilities are charged at members’ rates. Information on membership may be obtained from the bookings clerk or from the Society’s head office: P.O. Box 631, Wellington.

Bookings

Bookings are accepted up to nine months in advance, and must be accompanied by a deposit of 50%. This deposit is refundable in the event of cancellations made one month or more before the booked date.

Power mains

Main Lodge: If power is not already switched on, do this by opening the meter box on the left of the Main Lodge door (using one of your keys). With the exception of public and school holidays, please switch off power on departure.

Coutts’ Cabin: Switch on power at the mains box inside the cabin. If water in the ablution block is not hot, switch on hot water main at the switch above the hand basin. With the exception of public and school holidays, and if the A-frame is not occupied, please switch off power on departure.

A-frame: Switch on power at the mains box inside the A-frame. If water in the ablution block is not hot, switch on hot water main at the switch above the hand basin in the Coutts’ Cabin ablution block. With the exception of public and school holidays, and if Coutts’ Cabin is not occupied, please switch off power on departure.

Cleaning and rubbish disposal
On departure, please clean all buildings and appliances that have been used. Leave open fridge doors. Take away with you all rubbish (a rubbish disposal service is available at the Papatowai shop).

Departure and arrival times
Accommodation is available from mid-day on the day of arrival. Please vacate by mid-day on the day of departure unless prior arrangements have been made with the caretaker.

Local services
For information on public transport, contact the Owaka or Balclutha Information Centres. There is a general store and petrol station at Papatowai. No mail or telephone facilities are available at the lodge complex, and the area does not receive cellphone coverage. In the case of an emergency, the nearest telephone (private) is locatedat the Tautuku Outdoor Education Centre (3 kilometres north of the lodge complex), or at the Papatowai store (coin phone). The nearest doctor is at the Catlins Medical Centre, Owaka (phone 415 8006).
