Forest & Bird backs DOC in 1080 appeal

15 Nov 2012

Aerial 1080 is a pest control weapon that we don’t want to lose from our tool kit.

Yet an appeal by the Pelorus Protection Society Inc (a group of local residents) plans to remove that choice from the Department of Conservation’s armoury.

DOC was recently granted resource consent for discharge to water, and plans an aerial 1080 operation to protect an area of the Marlborough Sounds where birds like the South Island robin and a Marlborough endemic land snail Powelliphanta hochstetteri obscura, have been under increasing pressure from predation.

Forest & Bird joined the appeal in support of DOC, aiming to bring a local community voice to this Marlborough Sounds case.  We have entered into mediation and hope for a successful outcome.

Forest & Bird’s Marlborough branch chairperson, Andrew John, and local field officer Debs Martin represent the Society. It’s imperative we support DOC on these issues.
