South Island Gathering

30 Sep 2008

Our annual South Island gathering this year is at Takahanga Marae in Kaikoura from midday Friday October 17 until midday Sunday October 19, finishing with an early lunch. There is an exciting agenda of branch networking, a field trip and stimulating workshops and discussions.

The highlight on Saturday is a presentation by Phil Bradfield from DOC on Hutton’s shearwaters. A field trip will go around the Kaikoura Peninsula to the relocated Hutton’s shearwater nesting site.

We will be able to mix and mingle with members of Te Korowai, a local community initiative to address marine conservation around Kaikoura.

On Friday afternoon branches will be able to showcase their activities. Workshops include setting South Island priorities, using the new website, editing branch newsletters, communications, and focus groups on key conservation issues, such as 1080 and vehicles on beaches. Three workshops will provide a good opportunity for branch networking. A more detailed agenda will be sent to branch contacts very soon.

Cost per person is $165 (including accommodation in the wharenui at the marae at $15 a night). Or you can stay at nearby backpackers or motels (list provided on request). If you choose not to stay at the marae, the registration cost will be $135, and you will need to pay separately for your own accommodation. All meals (including breakfast) are included in the price and will be held at Takahanga Marae.

It is important – and a mark of respect for our hosts (Kaikoura branch and local iwi) – that people are at the official welcome at midday on Friday so please arrive on time.
Send registrations to Debs Martin at d.martin@forestandbird.org.nz by October 3. Please give details of names and branch (including children – free) and any dietary requirements.
