Teaming up with Federated Farmers on 1080

20 Apr 2010

Forest & Bird and Federated farmers have joined forces to educate the public about the benefits of 1080. The Pest Control Education Trust’s first initiative, a new website – 1080: The Facts – went live on April 8.

The website includes a plain language explanation of the key facts about 1080, fully referenced to scientific and technical papers, with downloadable studies and reports, including the full ERMA decision which supported the continuing use of 1080 in New Zealand.

Forest & Bird Advocacy Manager Kevin Hackwell says that while there need to be strict controls and protocols around its use, 1080 is a vital tool in the battle to preserve and protect native flora and fauna by controlled introduced pests.

Other organisations supporting the project include the Animal Health Board, the Department of Conservation, Dairy NZ, Solid Energy, the Isaac Wildlife Foundation, Meat & Wool New Zealand, PGG Wrightson, Deer Industry New Zealand, and Bush and Beyond.
