Making smart, eco-friendly seafood choices has just become even easier thanks to Forest & Bird’s new Best Fish Guide 2013-14.
Forest & Bird's Best Fish Guide allows consumers to make more informed choices when buying seafood in supermarkets and when dining out.
Our marine scientists have used a traffic-light system to rank each seafood species. The species on the guide’s green zone make good seafood choices. Those in the orange zone are OK choices, while those in the red zone are best avoided.
Each species is ranked according to its ecological sustainability. This means we’ve considered a whole range of environmental effects in our assessment.
Using the Best Fish Guide allows consumers to support eco-friendly fisheries, while sending a message to those that have fallen behind.
We’ll also relieve the pressure on the most overexploited seafood species and alleviate harm to the environment.
You can order a free, fold-up Best Fish Guide for your wallet, download the free app for iPhones and Android smartphones or download and print your own guide.
To make it even easier, 16 top New Zealand chefs have supplied recipes for our top seafood choices.
Forest & Bird advocates building a more sustainable seafood industry. We’re continually working with government departments, industry and conservation organisations so future generations will continue to enjoy New Zealand kai moana.
We are grateful for the support of The Lion Foundation in producing the Best Fish Guide.
