Forest & Bird condemns ECan sacking

Forest & Bird’s Council today expressed condemnation of the Government’s sacking of Environment Canterbury.

Members at the annual general meeting in Wellington condemned moves by the Government to:

• Give the Minister for the Environment special powers to override the legislative requirements of the Resource Management Act.
• Undermine the preservation of outstanding ecological, recreational or cultural characteristics of Canterbury rivers covered by water conservation orders by making the economic use of the rivers more important than their protection.
• Deny the democratic right of citizens to appeal commissioners’ decisions on Canterbury regional plans to the Environment Court, with evidence before commissioners not exposed to cross-examination or scientific scrutiny.

Forest & Bird members urge repeal of the Environment Canterbury (Temporary Commissioners and Improved Water Management) Act 2010.
