Protecting our native plants, animals and wild places, on land and in our oceans. Help us to help nature.

Renowned for its rugged, forested ranges and sweeping coastline, the Gisborne-East Coast region is home to many of New Zealand’s most special native species, and our branches are active in preserving that unique natural heritage.
Our branches are advocating for increased pest control in areas such as the Urewera and Raukumara Ranges, where introduced pest species such as deer are destroying the native forests and the native birds that live there. Forest & Bird members also take a hands-on role in pest control in the region.
They are also an effective voice through local and regional government planning processes to protect the region’s rugged landscape from erosion by promoting regeneration of native vegetation and discouraging clearing of inappropriate land.
And around the East Coast’s coastline Forest & Bird is advocating for the establishment of marine reserves to also protect the marine environment.
