Help Forest & Bird save the threatened species that live on the Denniston Plateau. Check out the six options below and make your selection on the form below.
Great spotted kiwi (roroa) - $500
The tallest of all kiwi, the great spotted kiwi is not large enough to ward off the threat of stoats and rats. There are an estimated 16,000 great spotted kiwi left, and they are rated “nationally vulnerable” – the third-highest threat ranking in New Zealand. |
Kākā - $200
Kākā were once wide spread throughout the country’s native forests. Now, thanks to loss of habitat, stoat attacks and competition for food from introduced animals, they’re on the endangered list and relegated largely to offshore islands or mainland sanctuaries. |
Powelliphanta patrickensis
|
West Coast green gecko - $50
This large green and gold gecko eats flies, moths and other insects, and is one of the wildlife gems of the Denniston Plateau. Numbers are on a downward spiral due to introduced rats, stoats and wasps, and habitat destruction from mining.
|
Kōura (freshwater crayfish) - $20The rapid intensification of agriculture has left our waterways in a mess and freshwater creatures like kōura struggling to survive. Kōura are New Zealand’s only endemic freshwater crayfish and their survival is already under threat. They are slow-growing and many aren’t reaching maturity as we continue to allow the degradation of their habitats. |
Southern rātā - $30
The southern rātā bloom colours forested mountainsides with a blaze of crimson. The flowers provide nectar for kākā, tūī and bellbirds, but are also a favourite food for possums. Denniston Plateau has unique forests of rātā stunted by the plateau’s depleted soils. Where rātā in other parts of New Zealand grow to 20 metres, in Denniston they reach just one metre. |
