To the Department of Conservation:

This is an individual submission.

I am submitting because I want to see New Zealand Aotearoa’s nature thrive. This Biodiversity Strategy needs to be a big bold plan to urgently halt the decline in our plants, animals, and their habitats, especially for nearly 4000 species heading towards extinction.

Leadership and commitment will be needed across local and central government, as well as a clear action plan with concrete and measurable steps.

Reforming our natural resource laws is essential. We need an overhaul of marine legislation to put restoring marine ecosystems and species at its centre, as well as strong National Policy Statements for our indigenous biodiversity and fresh water.

Sufficient resources are required to tackle pests, weeds, biosecurity threats and diseases. We must have effective predator control across all public conservation land by 2030 if we are to achieve a Predator Free NZ.

The Biodiversity Strategy must focus on the marine environment, as well as our land and fresh water.

Immediate steps are needed to achieve zero bycatch of marine mammals, seabirds and corals by 2030. By then, 30% of the full range of our sea habitats should be included in no-take marine protected areas.

Biodiversity must be at the heart of our response to the global climate crisis. We need to act on climate change for the sake of our animals and plants, so they can in turn make us more resilient.

We need to transform our economy by introducing the right incentives, shifting economic imperatives and backing them up with strong and enforceable legislation.

By delivering on such a big bold plan, we are saying this is what we stand for, this is what we treasure and this is who we are.
