New Zealand’s natural ecosystems store such vast amounts of carbon that small changes in those stores can have a significant impact on the country’s contribution to climate change.  These ecosystems should be our best carbon sinks, however, Forest & Bird’s recent report reveals that the impact of introduced herbivores such as deer, goats, pigs, possums and wallabies means that many of our natural ecosystems are now bleeding CO2.  If New Zealand is going to make a worthwhile contribution to the global fight to save the climate we must significantly step up our efforts to control these introduced pests.
