Saskia: Aquatic weeds alter high country spring ecosystems
Invasive species are among the biggest threats to biodiversity. In Aotearoa | New Zealand, aquatic weeds like monkey musk (Erythranthe guttata) and watercress (Nasturtium officinale) are rapidly spreading into remote springs. These plants can dramatically alter freshwater environments, impacting native plants and animals. By invading unmodified remote areas, aquatic weeds jeopardise ecosystems that often serve as the last refuges of biodiversity and play an important role in the provisioning of ecosystem services.
