The Three Rivers Project - E Toru Nga Awa: Ko Takaka, Ko Motupipi, Ko Onahau is the major project in Golden Bay.
This area is special for both people and wildlife. There are significant cultural sites, wetlands, sandspits, estuaries, a sand island, beaches and outstanding natural landscapes. It's also very busy - banded dotterel, variable oystercatchers, Caspian terns, red and black billed gulls and others are all nesting.
This project aims to restore habitat in support of these species. We do this through control and removal of invasive weeds and trees on the Rototai and Onahau Sandspits and the Rototai Shellbank to provide more roosting and nesting space for shorebirds and seabirds. We also record species, numbers and breeding success.
This project is supported in principle by Crown partners Manawhenua Ki Mohua, Tasman District Council and the Department of Conservation.
