Taylor planting site location

The rivers of Marlborough have been modified and almost all of the original vegetation has been removed with changing land uses, since European settlement.

F&B are working to restore the native vegetation in an area alongside the Taylor River by carrying out plantings of native species. The planting is on an area of the Marlborough District Council's Taylor River Reserve. Native trees will provide habitat and food for birds and other native fauna, but will also provide other benefits, increasing the tree cover in Blenheim, and providing shaded areas in summer. The tree planting on the Taylor will add to existing plantings like those by the Tui to Town project, forming part of a corridor for native birds.

The plantings should follow ecological principles and plantings should be based on a mass planting of pioneer species (which can later be interplanted with iconic species) and with a more structured border (the Tidy Frames idea from Colin Meurk’s recent talk at F&B). Plant selection is to be informed by MDC’s Native Vegetation for South Marlborough - A Planting Guide, with the addition of expert advice.

As well as Forest & Bird and Marlborough District Council many people and organisations have been involved in work on the planting site, including Enviroschools, Lions, Marlborough Boys' College Leos, Marlborough Girls' and Marlborough Boys' Colleges Environmental Groups. Yealands provided funding for some of the trees planted in 2024. We have also been helped with the project by DOC Wairau, KAM Transport, Flight Timbers, Southern Water Engineering, St Clair Vineyard, Southern Water Engineering. Thanks to you all for your contribution.
