Join us for a free guided walk through Chartwell Bush Reserve and Ōtari–Wilton’s Bush. The walk will take around 2 hours, although we will probably have 2 walking groups to allow people to choose the pace best suited to them. The group travelling at a more relaxed pace may take more than 2 hours.

All welcome (you don’t have to be a member of Forest & Bird).

Alternative date (in the event of bad weather on the 17th) is Sunday 24 March.

If bad weather causes a postponement, everyone who is registered will receive an email or text before 11 am on the day.

Please register on the Eventfinda link below.

12 years ago a group of walkers followed this route to see where planned restoration work would be done in the coming years. Come along now and see the difference that has been made in Chartwell Bush, plus some great views and a return loop through a lovely part of Ōtari–Wilton’s Bush.

It’s a mixture of fairly easy walking and moderate climbs and descents, so it may not be suitable for very young children. The tracks vary from very good (4WD) to moderate, with very short sections having some uneven surfaces and tree roots to negotiate. Unless there’s been recent rain, the tracks shouldn’t be muddy, but reasonable footwear is definitely advised. There is a small stream crossing, but unless there’s been very heavy rain, you won’t get your feet wet.

When you get to the start of the walk, look for the walk leader, who will be wearing a Forest & Bird hi-vis vest.

Location: approx. 41° 15' 41.20" S, 174° 45' 31.23" E.

Getting there:
By public transport: the Johnsonville Line runs every 30min on Sundays. The 1.02pm train from Wellington is scheduled to arrive at Crofton Downs at 1.10pm. — the Chartwell Bush entrance is 1.2km or about a 15min walk (slightly uphill) from Crofton Downs railway station.

By car, bike or foot: 250m south of Crofton Downs station is the junction of Churchill Drive and Chartwell Drive. Turn into Chartwell Drive and go along it for about 800m. The entrance to Chartwell Bush is on the left 100m beyond John Witton Drive. There is parking on the left just beyond the reserve entrance.
