Overfishing caused the whitebait fishery to close in Tasmania.

The Tasmanian whitebait fishery introduced a raft of sustainable fishing rules following the collapse of fish stocks in the late 1980s.

Ahead of tomorrow’s hikoi in the Far North, and the Far North District Council’s online forum on Significant Natural Areas (SNAs), Forest & Bird has made an FAQ available to provide reliable information for media and landowners.

“The changes to whitebait fishing announced today are fluff around the edges. They won’t bring back native fish from breaking point,” says Forest & Bird freshwater advocate Annabeth Cohen.  

Forest & Bird is celebrating the announcement of a new wetland restoration project near Lake Horowhenua, and calling for strong rules for wetlands and freshwater protection around the country.
